Nestled within Liberty Bay in Washington state, you'll find the incredible city of Poulsbo. Known as “Viking City” and “Little Norway,” this city maintains a strong Scandinavian theme, especially in its downtown, to honor the first European settlers of the area. With a similar climate to Scandinavia and access to rich resources and Liberty Bay, it's no wonder Poulsbo drew in so many Norwegian immigrants to build this incredible community. The city itself was founded in the 1880s by a Norwegian named Jorgen Eliason. A post office was established shortly after in 1886, but that establishment led to an error with the name. Originally, this community was supposed to be named Paulsbo, or Paul's Place in Norwegian, but the D.C. worker who registered the city misread the handwriting and registered it as Poulsbo. Even so, this community was so Norwegian that English didn't become the most common language until World War II, when the government provided housing for nearby naval shipyard workers in town.

If you want to absorb the unique Scandinavian-American Poulsbo culture, you'll need a place to rest in between your adventures. Because the community offers such a unique experience that draws in visitors from all around, you can be sure that there are plenty of hotels in the area. Whether you're looking for something affordable, luxurious, or in between, Poulsbo has all the options you need. Find the right hotel for your next trip, and make sure you can enjoy everything Poulsbo has to offer.

When to Visit Poulsbo, WA

When most people think of Scandinavia, they imagine bitter winters and piles of snow. After learning that Poulsbo was settled due in part to its similarity with the Scandinavian climate, warm-weather travelers may be hesitant to visit. Fortunately, Poulsbo is not as cold as some may think. The winters are certainly cold, but average mean temperatures throughout the winter don't really come close to freezing. In fact, it's not uncommon to see highs during that season around 45 degrees. The summers are only moderately warm, however, with average mean temperatures only reaching the 60s, mostly in July and August.

Precipitation varies quite a bit throughout the year. If you're traveling during early spring or late fall, make sure you bring your umbrella. The daily chance of rain in March is 36 percent, while November generally has a daily chance of 34 percent. If you're looking to stay dry, July and August are the best times to travel. August has just an 8-percent daily chance of rain, while July holds just a 3-percent chance. Typically, around just 0.4 inch of rain falls throughout all of July. This is especially significant when compared to the 7.7 inches of rain throughout November.

Because summer is the warmest and driest season, it's the busiest for travelers. That means you can expect more crowds and higher hotel prices when traveling during this time, when the area generally offers more attractions to experience. If you're looking for great hotel rates, fall and winter are the best times to travel. If you can handle the cold, you can experience some of the greatest features Poulsbo has to offer on a budget. Just keep in mind that while fall seems like a good compromise, the wind chill can make it feel colder than what the temperature actually says.
