The logging and sawmill industries were major parts of Sandy's economy, thanks to the abundance of trees in the forested area. German immigrants later arrived in the area, adding to the population, and the city was incorporated in 1911. The city has a high school that has been around for more than a century. Approximately 11,000 residents call it home and it includes just over 3 square miles of land. The major growth of the Portland metropolitan area has led to a population surge in Sandy, making it the second-fastest growing city in the state, according to a study performed in 2018.
