The Rockland center point is around the area of Rockland Town Landing and the area of Rockland Golf Club.

Rockland is a centerpiece of Midcoast Maine, located on the Penobscot Bay, just minutes from the rocky coast and world-famous lobster boats. The town thrives with a rich history, beautiful scenery, and energetic visual arts scene. The picturesque multi-use harbor is the perfect place to spend a summer day. The early settlers came to this land to take advantage of its rich reserves of lumber, fertile lands, and the abundance of fish. At first, Rockland was a part of Thomason and was referred to as The Shore Village. The area quickly started flourishing with its trading and shipping industries, and, subsequently, shipbuilding became another prosperous branch of business in the area. After the Revolution, the lime industry became a top priority as limestone used to be an essential building material, and large, pure-limestone pools were discovered around Thomason. And after all the successes and luck in its early development, the city just kept adapting and growing. As a separate entity, Rockland started its journey in 1848 after separating from Thomason. At first, it was called East Thomason, but in 1850 the name was changed to Rockland. Rockland became significant to the area once again in 1860 when Knox County was formed, and the city became a county seat bringing lawyers, judges, and county jail services to its center. From railway and electric trolley building to ice production and distribution before the creation of freezers, from chicken farms to fresh produce, from shoe factories and sportswear production to fiberglass boat manufacturing, this city tried its hand and scored in just about anything. This wealthy history keeps fueling Rockland's spirited present. Today the main focus of its development rests on tourism. Various cultural organizations, restaurants, art events bring visitors from all over the country. Cultural institutions like Rockland Public Carnegie Library (built in 1904), the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, the Rockland Historical Society, and the William A. Farnsworth Art Museum (1948) are ready to welcome you year-round and introduce the city at its best. More from this guide...

Special Must-Visit Spots in Rockland

The city is home to the Maine Lighthouse Museum. The facility has the most extensive collection of lifesaving, lighthouse, and U.S. Coast Guard relics in America. It is a significant place to attend for anyone interested in U.S. maritime history. The Lighthouse Museum overlooks the historic Rockland Breakwater and scenic Penobscot Bay. The construction of the Breakwater was finished in 1899; the structure shielded the coast from the Nor'easter Storm active in the region. The lighthouse was added in 1902.
