We were on a road trip to Maine with our two little dogs and planned to stay two nights in Salem to see the historic town. This hotel is both dog friendly and located within walking distance of most of the towns historic sites. At 100 years old, it is historic itself and supposedly haunted, but beautiful, proudly well maintained (think Bertram's Hotel, for you Agatha Christie fans) and the ghosts didn't bother us.😊 It has its own parking lot for its guests, which is invaluable in a historical district on a road trip. The staff is wonderful. Dinner at the Tavern was not bad, but we did not think the food merited the high Trip Advisor rating. The ambiance, however, is undeniable. Dark old wood paneling and several well cushioned arm chairs make you feel like the captain from some 19th century boat that just anchored in the harbor may walk in. (Again, think Bertram's Hotel The rooms are well maintained and very comfortable. I just bought a scented candle at a new age witch themed store across the street. The young sales person asked me where I was staying, so I pointed to the Hawthorne and explained why I needed the candle. “Old building,” I said. “And haunted!” she added. And while the food in the Tavern was a bit disappointing, the breakfast offered in Nathaniel's Restaurant is lovely. My tip: have drinks in the Tavern and then go to Bella Verona across the street next to the new age shop. In short, the Hawthorne is a wonderful hotel where we would gladly stay again.
Would and have recommended to everyone.
