St. Louis' owes its semi-European vibe to its cultural and historical infrastructure. Any place, cosmopolitan at that, which is capable of producing the 20th century's greatest rockers and poets, namely Chuck Berry and T.S. Eliot, holds a lot of inspiration. Missouri's St. Louis hauls its considerable industrial strength from its formidable transportation - from steamboats to trains and air haulage. Nonetheless, St. Louis' stride has not always been an easy ride. The city has seen a remarkable turnaround from the nadir of the seventies, with tourist destinations sprawling on the riverfront's revitalized area. Visitors are welcomed by Laclede Landing's restored warehouses and the magnificent Gateway Arch. Try not to leave St. Louis without sampling the outlying quarters. Visit the Italian storefronts of the Hill or the jazz pubs of Soulard - and stay because of the city's famed barbecued spare ribs. The city reportedly leads the world in per capita consumption of barbecue sauce. Among the city's famed joints are Smoki O's, where the menu includes barbecue spaghetti, crispy snoot, and rib tips; Roper's Ribs, smoked over hickory and seasoned with a secret blend of spices; and Pappy's Smoke House, known for slow-smoked, dry-rubbed pork ribs.
