The Decatur center is about the area of Browns Ferry Nuclear and the area of Downtown Decatur.
Whether you want to enjoy Decatur's long, hot summers or you're looking to experience its attractions during a milder season, there's no bad time to plan a trip to this Alabama hotspot.
In the summer, temperatures regularly top out in the low 90s, and the area sees its fair share of thunderstorms. Spring and fall are much cooler, with highs in the mid-70s. Fall is typically the driest season of the year, but spring brings rain and the occasional tornado. Winters can get chilly, but temperatures only dip below freezing a few times a year.
Spring tends to be the priciest season to visit as it's the peak tourism season for Decatur, but that doesn't mean your visit has to break the bank. If you book your hotel in advance, you'll likely get a better deal.
If you're planning your visit around the most affordable seasonal hotel rates, set your sights on late winter or early spring. Since this is the chilliest time of year, it's low season for local tourism, and many hotels offer reduced room rates.
Whether you have your eye on a budget-friendly motel or a luxury hotel, you can save with group discounts on Decatur accommodations. AAA members get low rates at the Microtel Inn & Suites and at many other properties. AARP members and senior travelers can save at the Quality Inn and at the Courtyard by Marriott Decatur. Government employees and members of the military can get discounts at the Home Towne Suites Decatur as well as at other area hotels.

Any time of year is the perfect time to pay a visit to the Carnegie Visual Arts Center in the heart of Decatur. Here, you'll find rotating arts exhibitions that highlight the history of Northern Alabama and showcase local artists. Be sure to check the arts center's calendar for a full list of performances and events.
Next, get outside and explore Decatur's many green spaces. The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, located on the southeast side of town, is the most popular park and a true gem for all ages. You can spot whooping cranes, deer, geese, and many other waterfowl here, depending on the season. This is also the ideal spot for hiking, hunting, fishing, and boating. Be sure to bring your camera, as you'll find countless photo opportunities here.
If you're looking for a smaller and more manageable park, head straight for Delano Park. This green space boasts beautiful rose gardens, a fun play area for kids, and even opportunities for bird-watching. Don't miss the Trail of History, which will show you everything you need to know about Decatur's past.
If you're traveling with kids in the summertime, don't miss a trip to Point Mallard Water Park, a prime spot on hot summer days. Kids and kids-at-heart will love riding the waves in the wave pool, cruising along the lazy river, and catching some rays on the beach.
