Milan, Michigan, has a small population of nearly 6,000. It was founded in 1831 and was originally simply called 'Farmer' because everyone in town was a farmer. A drug store owner took over the postmaster position at one point and called the area Tolanville after himself. The postmaster after that placed the post office within his flour mill and called it Woodard's Mill after his company.
Washington, D.C., noticed the swift changes and the confusion that often ensued and called the town Milan after the nearby Milan Township. That region was called Milan Township because the French settlers hoped to produce wine and grapes in the area, so they named it after the Italian city.
The area hosts the Raisin River, which is named for the French word for "grape," and there is also a town called Grape nearby, which shows that the settlers really wanted to produce wine in this region. The city is only 3.4 square miles and sits 16 miles to the southeast of Ann Arbor and 37 miles northwest of Toledo.
Visitors quickly notice the turn-of-the-century two-story homes in the area, and those close to downtown even have barns, which once housed horses and carriages, but have now been turned into garages for cars. Milan has developed over the years, but it is still known for country living with a lot of working farms scattered around.
Milan is known for the Milan Dragway, its automobile drag racing venue, as well as the Hack House, the city's museum that was built in 1888. The founder of the museum, Olive Friend, got her money for the house through a corporate scam she ran in New York called the Electric Sugar Refining Machine.
