The history of Solon begins in 1820 when the first settlers, hailing from Connecticut, made their home in what was then part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. The location was named after Lorenzo Solon Bull, the son of one of the earliest settlers. The township's moniker reflects an admiration for the ancient Athenian lawmaker Solon, considered the "father of democracy." These early pioneers faced the typical settlement challenges, with the added difficulty of draining the wetlands to make the land suitable for agriculture.
