The Delaware County Institute of Science was formed on September 21, 1833 as an association at first of only five individuals; namely George Miller, Minshall Painter, John Miller, George Smith, M.D., and John Cassin. These friends were interested in sciences and natural history. When membership increased it became necessary for the Institute to obtain real estate and an application was made to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania for corporate privileges, which were granted on the 8th of February, 1836. A "hall of modest pretensions was built in Upper Providence in 1837 at which the members continued to hold their meetings until after the middle of the 1800's" (From George Smith's "History of Delaware County, published by this Institute in 1862.) In 1850 when Media was incorporated as a borough and also became the seat of government for Delaware County, it seemed wise to move the institute to that town, and to be nearer public transportation. Minshall painter obtained and presented to the organization the grounds on which the present building stands. The building was constructed in 1867. As before "The object of the association was to promote the study and diffusion of general knowledge and the establishment of a museum. And to serve as a non-profit organization for the people of Delaware County and adjoining areas."
Things To Do in Lester: Cedar Park #7 of 30 Things To Do in Lester
Cedar Park (Neighborhood)
Philadelphia PA
~6.76 miles from Lester city center
Hotels Close to Cedar Park
The park is part of the streetscape -- separated from traffic by low concrete walls and a few fences, but open enough that what happens in the park is well in view to everyone around. Which is good, I think. The park functions as a part of the neighborhood, with people's homes on one side and the commercial strip between 49th and 50th on the other. A new playground was installed just in the last year or so. Usually at least a few kids are hanging around, happy to play with other kids who happen by. The local bums have their own hangout spot along a wall a little further down the street, and they seem well disposed to keep a friendly eye on the kids, keeping their alcoholic energies to themselves. In my opinion, it works out pretty well. The commercial strip across the street includes the Satellite cafe, the liquor store (Pennsylvania Wine and Spirits), Elena's Soul Lounge, and the Dock Street brewery and pizza joint in the old Firehouse at 50th St. with a bicycle shop and acupuncture outfit up the exterior staircase.

Lincoln Financial Field, familiarly known as "The Linc", is the home stadium of the National Football League's Philadelphia Eagles. It has a seating capacity of 68,532 (69,032 with Standing Room Only tickets). It is located in South Philadelphia on Pattison Avenue between 11th and 10th Streets, also aside I-95 as part of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. The Stadium opened on August 3, 2003 after 2 years of construction beginning in May 7, 2001 and replaced the old Veterans Stadium. While its total capacity barely changed, the new stadium contained double the amount of luxury and wheelchair-accessible seats, along with the newer, more modern services. Like the Vet, Lincoln Financial Field had a jail inside the stadium, that contained four cells. However, this jail was done away within two years as the level of unruly behavior had dropped considerably from the worst days of the Vet. The Linc also plays host to several soccer games each year, and in the past two years it has played host to the NCAA lacrosse national championship. Naming rights were granted in June 2002 to Lincoln Financial Group for a sum of $139.6 million over 21 years. Additional construction funding was raised from the sale of Stadium Builder's Licenses to Eagles season ticket holders. The Army–Navy football game is also played at the stadium. Temple University's Division I FBS college football team also plays their home games at Lincoln Financial Field, paying the Eagles $1 million a year to do so.

The University of Pennsylvania (commonly referred to as Penn) is a private research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Penn is the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, and is one of several institutions that claims to have been the first university in America. Penn is a member of the Ivy League and is one of the Colonial Colleges. Benjamin Franklin, Penn's founder, advocated an educational program that focused as much on practical education for commerce and public service as on the classics and theology. Penn was one of the first academic institutions to follow a multidisciplinary model pioneered by several European universities, concentrating multiple "faculties" (e.g., theology, classics, medicine) into one institution. Penn is today one of the largest private universities in the nation, offering a broad range of academic departments, an extensive research enterprise and a number of community outreach and public service programs. Penn is particularly well known for its medical school, dental school, business school, law school, social sciences and humanities programs and its biomedical teaching and research capabilities. Its undergraduate programs are also among the most selective in the country. In FY2009, Penn's academic research programs undertook more than $730 million in research, involving some 3,800 faculty, 1,000 postdoctoral fellows and 5,400 support staff/graduate assistants. Much of the funding is provided by the National Institutes of Health for biomedical research. Penn tops the Ivy League in annual spending, with a projected 2009 budget of $5.542 billion. In 2008, it ranked fifth among U.S. universities in fundraising, bringing in about $475.96 million in private support. Incorporated as The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn is one of 14 founding members of the Association of American Universities.

Rittenhouse Square is one of the five original open-space parks planned by William Penn and his surveyor Thomas Holme during the late 17th century in central Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park cuts off 19th Street at Walnut Street and also at a half block above Manning Street. Its boundaries are 18th Street to the East, Walnut St. to the north, Rittenhouse Square West (a north-south boundary street), and Rittenhouse Square South (an east-west boundary street), making the park approximately two short blocks on each side. Originally called Southwest Square, Rittenhouse Square was renamed in 1825 after David Rittenhouse, a descendant of the first paper-maker in Philadelphia, the German immigrant William Rittenhouse.[2] William Rittenhouse's original paper-mill site is known as Rittenhousetown, located in the rural setting of Fairmount Park along Paper Mill Run. David Rittenhouse was a clockmaker and friend of the American Revolution, as well as a noted astronomer; a lunar crater is named after him. In the early nineteenth century, as the city grew steadily from the Delaware River to the Schuylkill River, it became obvious that Rittenhouse Square would become a highly desirable address. James Harper, a merchant and brick manufacturer who had recently retired from the United States Congress, was the first person to build on the square, buying most of the north frontage, erecting a stately townhouse for himself at 1811 Walnut Street (c. 1840). Having thus set the patrician residential tone that would subsequently define the Square, he divided the rest of the land into generously proportioned building lots and sold them. Sold after the congressman's death, the Harper house became the home of the exclusive Rittenhouse Club, which added the present facade in c. 1901. Today, the tree-filled park is surrounded by high rise residences, luxury apartments, popular restaurants, a Barnes & Noble bookstore, and two hotels, including a five-star. Its green grasses and dozens of benches are popular lunch-time destinations for residents and workers in Philadelphia's Center City neighborhood, while its lion and goat stautes are popular gathering spots for small children and their parents. The park is a popular dog walking destination for area residents, as was shown in the fictional film In Her Shoes. The Square was discussed in a favorable light by Jane Jacobs in her seminal work, "The Death and Life of Great American Cities." The beauty of the Park is due largely to the efforts of Friends of Rittenhouse Square, a public-private partnership with the Fairmount Park Commission. Landscaping, lighting, restoration of fountains and fencing—even the installation and stocking of doggie-bag dispensers—are all projects of the Friends of Rittenhouse Square.
