Founded by settlers from Massachusetts on land purchased from the local Shinnecock Indian Nation in 1640, Southampton became the first English community in New York. The area is rich in history, dating back beyond the age of colonization. A strong relationship with the natives brought about a culture rooted in agriculture, which helped to financially allow the town to transform into the resort community it is today. You can catch a performance, peruse an art exhibit, or take a class at the Southampton Cultural Center to immerse yourself in the local customs.
