"Visiting Old Sturbridge Village is an incredible and unique experience - it is a chance to step back in time and learn about what life was like in the early 1800s, while still being able to appreciate the modern comforts of today."By Linda Taylor, Travel Writer
Welcome to Old Sturbridge Village - a living history museum that takes you back in time to the early 1800s. Whether you're visiting for the day or staying for a week, you can experience the rich history and culture of New England in a way that's like no other. Located just over an hour west of Boston and two hours from Providence, RI, Old Sturbridge Village is a living history museum that brings the past to life. At Old
Sturbridge Village, you can step back in time and witness life in New
England during the 1830s. The authentically-recreated place consists of 59
historic buildings, including a working farm, a Main Street lined with shops, a country tavern, and a school. Visitors can explore the village, learning about the history and culture of early 19th century America. Stroll through the center of the village and visit a working farm, blacksmith shop, and country store. Each building is filled with authentic artifacts which tell stories of the everyday lives of the people of the 1830s. You can explore the homes and businesses of the villagers, see how their work was done, and even try your hand at some of the tasks. In addition to the buildings,
there are a variety of activities and programs to choose from. You can watch a
blacksmith in action, see a water-powered sawmill in operation, or learn about
the history of the area. You can also attend workshops like candle-dipping, butter-churning, and broom-making. Besides, the village features a number of special events throughout the year, such as the Harvest
Festival, the Christmas by Candlelight celebration, and the 19th Century Baseball
Game.
Explore the interactive exhibits and learn about the
daily lives of the people who lived here almost two centuries ago. It offers an exceptional experience for visitors of all ages. The knowledgeable staff will
give an engaging and educational tour around the spot, and the costumed
interpreters will bring the history to life with their stories and
demonstrations. For a perfect day in the village, take a guided tour of the
historic buildings, watching a craft demonstration, dropping by the Cooper
Shop, and shopping for period-inspired crafts, gifts, and books in our museum stores. Afterwards, enjoy a leisurely stroll along our nature trails, try your
hand at fishing in our stocked pond, or play a game of pick-up baseball in the
village green. Whether you're a history buff or simply seeking for a fun and
educational trip, Old Sturbridge Village is the ideal destination. More from this guide...
