The city was originally incorporated as Springville in 1838. Gold had been discovered in the area ten years earlier, attracting European-American settlers. The city was renamed Powder Springs in 1859 after the discovery of seven springs along the city's border. The water in these springs contains 27 minerals that turn the sand around it black.
