As a town of fewer than 7,000 people, Morrow is easy to overlook when you're scanning a map or driving by. However, this town is home to many places of higher education, scenic beauty, and historical significance. It's also only 15 miles south of Atlanta, making it a superb place to stay outside of the hustle and bustle of the city, but it's still within proximity of some of the area's major attractions.
The area where Morrow now sits was once occupied only by a depot of the Macon and Western Railroad Company, but in the mid-1800s, it became an important stop for freight and people on their way to Atlanta. As the city expanded, it became less centered on the railroad, and in the mid-20th century, it began its journey toward becoming a modernized town. Today, it's famous for its higher education institutions as well as Spivey Hall, its world-renowned performance arts center. The town is also known as the home of the Georgia Archives and the National Archives.
Whether you're visiting for business or leisure, make sure you get a hotel room that suits your needs and makes your trip comfortable and memorable.
When to Visit Morrow, GA
The best time to head to Morrow, Georgia, is during the late spring and early summer. The temperature and humidity remain at comfortable levels during this time, providing ample opportunities to explore the charming downtown area or visit one of several parks and wildlife areas. Each June, Morrow celebrates Freedom Fest, which is an annual event that celebrates freedom from oppression. This event brings spectators from around the area for spectacular live music, food vendors, and wholesome family activities. Hotels aren't always busy during this time because the 6,900 students from Clayton State University head home for the summer. Nevertheless, it's still important to book early to get the best rate possible and the room of your choice.
During the fall, the town becomes vibrant with the beginning of the fall semester. This effectively doubles the size of the town, and the energetic student body breathes new life into Morrow. Temperatures in the autumn are especially comfortable, as the heat and humidity from the summer start to die down, bringing highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. Collegiate and professional football and basketball are a huge draw during this time, making advance hotel reservations essential, especially if there's a rivalry game or an Atlanta Falcons game.
In the winter, Morrow's temperatures lower dramatically. While Morrow typically gets through winter without any snow, it's always a possibility. Most of this season is dry, yet temperatures don't usually go above the mid-50s. If you love skiing or snowboarding, Snow Mountain at Stone Mountain Park provides some great slopes for the novice and intermediate sportsman. Hotel bookings are less frequent during this time, so supply and demand are in your favor, and you may be able to score a great room at a discounted price.
The spring is the season of rebirth, and it's a beautiful time to see the foliage of the area spring back into life. Nearby areas such as International Park and the Newman Wetlands Center are the perfect venues to see this transition. Unlike many other locations in the South, Morrow sees the least amount of rainfall during the spring, allowing you to explore these areas without getting drenched. Accommodation isn't in high demand during this season, and if you're vigilant, you could easily score a great deal with one of the local hotels.
