In 1887, Harvey Henderson Wilcox, a landowner, submitted a map of Hollywood to the recording office in Los Angeles. The first official street was called Prospect Avenue. It was later renamed Hollywood Boulevard.

Hollywood's history moved forward with an increase in population to 500 at the turn of the century. In 1902, the Hollywood Hotel was constructed. The city had a single-track streetcar route replaced by trolley cars in 1904.

The early 1900s also saw an influx of movie makers to Los Angeles and eventually to Hollywood. In 1919 in nearby Edendale, the first studio went into production followed by another in 1911 located in Hollywood.

In 1923, the Hollywood land sign was erected as advertisement for a housing development project. It was later changed to what we see now as "HOLLYWOOD" perched perfectly on the side of the mountain.

Best Time to Visit Hollywood, CA

If you prefer moderate temperatures in the 60-degree range, January through March is the time to visit. During the spring, temperatures rise to the low 70s. Summer is the prime time with June starting things off with mid-70 temperatures, and July, August, and September in the 80s. The fall season is a quiet time with comfortable temperatures averaging 76 degrees. For winter travelers, November dips a few degrees and by December, the mid-60 range is what to expect.

The best time to experience Hollywood is any time, but summertime is the high season which runs June through mid-October. The beaches, concerts, and festivals are prevalent and many travelers want to enjoy the sunny weather and minimal rainfall. Expect crowds and higher rates. Smog can also be heavy during the summer.

March, April, and May, and September through November sees less crowds and lower prices for accommodations. Winter is another good time to visit Hollywood due to temperate weather and little rainfall. The worse time to visit Hollywood for increased crowds is during any of the major holidays.
