Cornwall was originally known as New Johnstown when it was founded in 1784. The area had always been traveled by Mohawk and Iroquois peoples, and at the time of colonization, it experienced an influx of French, British, and American immigrants. The town was eventually renamed Cornwall in honor of England's Duke of Cornwall, but its status as a cultural melting pot continued to evolve. Cornwall regularly held social events in an effort to pool workers and resources, and these meetings helped to integrate residents from all ethnicities and walks of life.
Today, Cornwall's remarkably diverse culture and cuisine is a direct result of its past efforts to build an integrated community. In addition to its arts and culture scene, Cornwall offers plenty of other activities to make your vacation memorable. Enjoy cycling, fishing, golfing, running, and water-based opportunities all right here in town. If you're planning a trip to Cornwall, the first things to consider are when you want to visit and where you want to stay.
