Ottawa is the capital of Canada, located in the southeast of the province of Ontario. It borders Gatineau, Quebec, to form the Ottawa-Gatineau metropolitan area and the National Capital Region. The metropolitan area has a population of over 1.3 million, while Ottawa has close to a million residents within the city limits. Ottawa was founded in 1826 and has evolved to become the technological and political center of the country. Its name comes from the nearby Ottawa River, which derives from the Algonquin word meaning "to trade." More from this guide...

The city has so much to offer from shopping at Rideau Centre and the Byward Market to site seeing. The light show at Parliament Hill was quite different and good to see. The National War Museum was excellent for those liking history. We took a tour of the Rideau Canal which was wonderful and informative. The parks in Gatineau were beautiful, clean and safe. The trails were very busy with walkers and cyclists. From the tour operators to the hotel staff and general public, everyone was very friendly. I had only to pull out my "tourist" map to look at and someone would be offering to help me find where I wanted to go.
