The name Cozumel comes from the Mayan phrase “Ah Cuzamil Peten,” which means “the island of swallows.” It's believed that the Maya settled here in the early part of the first century, although older artifacts have been uncovered on the island. The first European exploration occurred in 1518 when as many as 10,000 Maya inhabited the island.

Located south of Cancun along the eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel is Mexico's largest Caribbean island. Most of Cozumel's resident population lives in San Miguel on the island's western shore. Its modern economy relies heavily on tourism, charter fishing, and diving, so there are numerous hotels, restaurants, and shopping experiences to choose from during your stay. Whatever your reason for visiting Cozumel, it's important to do your research so you can find the best hotel that suits your travel style.

Best Time to Visit Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel's climate is considered a tropical savanna, but it closely borders a tropical monsoon climate, resulting in a lengthy wet season bookended by a short dry season. The best time to visit Cozumel is from May to July, when daytime temperatures hover around 80 degrees. The summer is short but sweet, offering great hotel rates and memorable festivals.

August through November sees highs in the 90s with a constant threat of rain, making this the least popular season. If you prefer to avoid crowds and take advantage of the year's best hotel rates, book during the wet season—just keep an eye out for hurricane activity.

December through April is Cozumel's peak tourist season, so it's naturally the most expensive time to plan a trip. The winter months draw in northern snowbirds looking for a reprieve from frigid weather, and prices tend to spike with the influx. Christmas and Easter are particularly expensive times to visit. However, if price isn't a factor, you'll enjoy dry, pleasant weather and a number of events, including Carnaval.

Explore San Miguel, Cozumel, Mexico

Regardless of where you book your room, exploring San Miguel is a must. The largest city in Cozumel, San Miguel is a buzzing metropolis in its own right, offering incredible food, safe streets, and a family-oriented culture that can't be beat. Many shops are open late, giving you a great opportunity to explore the city from morning to evening.

For an authentic slice of Cozumel life, head to El Mercado, the island's traditional market. From 6 a.m. to about 1 p.m., vendors offer up freshly squeezed bottles of orange, carrot, or grapefruit juice, fresh meats, tacos, handmade goods, apparel, souvenirs, and other treasures.

To discover the history of Cozumel, head to Museo de la Isla de Cozumel. This museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions relating the history of the island and its people through modern times. There's even an on-site restaurant and souvenir shop.

San Miguel's town square is a vibrant shopping center and bustling downtown waterfront district offering shade from trees and lovely stone walls that are perfect for a break from your walking tour. Find a shaded seat and people-watch before moving onto the next street. Keep in mind, though, that special events tend to occur in the town square on Sunday nights, attracting large crowds. If you're in town during this time, you won't want to miss the traditional music and dance.

When you're craving authentic Mexican food, San Miguel offers a variety of eateries that satisfy. Restaurante Palmeres is a local favorite serving up island-inspired omelets, nachos, refried beans, Cajun fish, and fruity cocktails, but there are plenty of restaurants and open-air cafes offering delicious meals and snacks.

Exploring Cozumel in its entirety is a tall order, but no matter what your itinerary includes, you'll love this diverse island and its friendly people. No matter your travel style, you'll find the perfect hotel that meets all of your needs.

What did travelers think of the city of Cozumel?

Below are reviews of the city of Cozumel, Mexico from an actual visitor's perspective.

"Explore via Scooter"
Score 5.0 / 5

The island of Cozumel is third world looking, but with the beautiful ocean surrounding the island how can you go wrong. I recommend renting a scooter and traveling down to the different communities that offer all you can drink and all you can eat like Mr. Sanchos. Just make sure if you rent anything like a scooter or a vehicle you take pictures before you leave the facility of the rental.
