During the first century of Georgia history, much of the northwest part of the state was considered “Indian Country” and bypassed when settlers were traveling. Present-day Canton, on the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, was in the heart of Cherokee Nation. European-American settlers began moving into this area after the Georgia Gold Rush of 1829. The city had several names over the years, including Cherokee, Etowah, and Cherokee Courthouse, before finally settling on Canton, which comes from the Chinese city of Guangzhou. When settlers chose that name, they hoped that this town would become a center of the silk industry, as the Chinese city was at one time.

Canton doesn't host any major events, although local happenings include the annual Veteran's Day parade, holiday events, and other smaller things going on in the town.
