We have been coming to Encinitas for years--for the beautiful beaches, the vibrant but intimate downtown scene with its cozy restaurants and cafes and shops. But most of all, we love the semi-funky vibe and eclectic ambience of this relatively small beach community. It's got everything--great restaurants, surf shops, yoga studios, massage spas, shops of every sort, used book and clothing stores, pizza joints, markets, meditation gardens, outdoor cafes, bakeries, breweries, etc., etc., all efficiently and artfully tucked in and connected along a short stretch of old highway one. Nothing better than breakfast on the patio at Swami's Cafe an a bright sunny morning with the smell of the Pacific carried by soft summer beeze.

I like that is has so many options for eating and shopping all in one place. Although it is a city it feels hometown small too.

Must go to the San Diego Botanical Garden in Encinitas. Lovely tropical plant section with exotic fruit trees, a Mexican garden with statues and a fountain and the largest bamboo forest in North America! Also you must go to the speakeasy Oculto 477 in Old Town!
