The San Dieguitos originally settled in the area before the Spanish colonials found a trail to avoid the marshes on their journeys. Settlers eventually arrived in the late 1800s, and the area was named Lockwood Mesa until the early 1920s. After the construction of the Lake Hodges Dam, the area began to see rapid growth. The development of the Santa Fe Irrigation District ensured that the area would continue to expand.
The community used a high-pressure water system to erode away the earth and create Fletcher Cove to allow access to the area's amazing beaches. The beach was officially opened on the Fourth of July in 1925, and the area became a bustling tourist town. The city officially received its incorporation in 1986 and received the spotlight when it became the city to host funeral services for Desi Arnaz.
The area is now known as a charming seaside community located only 30 minutes from the city of San Diego. Solana Beach is a popular stop for tourists who want to enjoy the beach. The beach has more than 1 1/2 miles of sand and makes a great destination for surfing and sailing. The city is also known for its amazing year-round weather with temperatures averaging around 62 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 77 degrees in the summer. Solana Beach is known for its bustling nightlife, distinctive shopping, palate-pleasing dining, and photo-worthy hiking trails.
The Best Time to Visit Solana Beach
Due to its temperate climate conditions, you won't find a bad time to visit Solana Beach. You can enjoy all outdoor activities, including hiking, during the winter months. Temperatures only drop to around 50 degrees with average temperatures ranging in the 60s.
If you plan to enjoy your vacation on the water, the best time of year to visit is during the summer and early fall, with the months of June through October being the peak tourist season. Unfortunately, this time of year can also bring large crowds and more expensive accommodations. If you are traveling on a budget, you may want to consider the off-season months of the year.
If you want the best rates on accommodations, or you want to travel when tourist crowds are low, spring can be the ideal time. Temperatures still average in the 70s. While the water temperatures may be slightly cooler than in the summer, the temperatures themselves are still tolerable. Try to book later in the spring but before Memorial Day weekend to ensure that you get the best rates.
