Rates shown are nightly rates before taxes and do not necessarily reflect all Point Loma, CA discounts available. The chart reflects the cheapest Point Loma hotel for each day and each star rating category.

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer, was the first person to arrive in Point Loma. Before his landing in 1542, no European had set foot in California, leading many to call this city the place “where California began.” No indigenous people called the area home, but Europeans didn't settle here until more than 200 years after its discovery. It was originally called La Punta de la Loma de San Diego, Spanish for the Hill Point of San Diego. However, its name was eventually shortened to simply Point Loma.

The southern part of Point Loma became a military hub around 1852. This part of the peninsula is still home to a pair of military bases. Point Loma is also notably the place where Charles Lindbergh tested his first aircraft, The Spirit of St. Louis. A post office sits on the site now, but its plaques commemorate Lindbergh's historic flight.

Today, Point Loma is a vibrant community of about 48,000 residents. It's popular with tourists interested in America's history and visitors who simply want to soak up the sun in their downtime.

When should you visit Point Loma, CA?

A summer vacation in Point Loma sounds appealing until you start researching the prices. Many households can travel only during the extended summer school vacation period, so you'll see an increase in airline and accommodation prices during this time of year.

Travel earlier, between March and early May, or wait until summer passes and take your trip between September and November. The spring and fall weather will still average around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but you won't face the inflated travel prices.

Admittedly, the temperatures rarely drop substantially, even during the winter. However, if your heart is set on swimming and sunning yourself on the sand, you'll want to avoid the winter months. They're often stormy and overcast, leading many locals to talk of the “May Gray” and “June Gloom.” The rains also make the ocean cold, even on warm days.
