When Mexico achieved independence from Spain in the 1800s, the government began issuing land grants. One of these land grants included what is now known as San Ysidro and the recipient built La Punta, an adobe house that was the area's first structure. The area grew rapidly when San Diego was connected to other cities in the U.S. via a railroad line. The neighboring city of Tijuana, Mexico, became a gambling destination in the early 1920s, so many Americans lived in San Ysidro and worked in these establishments.
The district houses the world's fourth-busiest land border crossing, which is where I-5 enters Mexico in Tijuana.
