Takoma Park is located about 7 miles north of Washington D.C., in Montgomery County, Maryland. It was founded by Benjamin F. Gilbert in 1883 as one of the commuter suburbs centered on a railway station in Tacoma. D.C. resident Ida Summy named the town “Takoma,” which she believed to mean “near heaven” or “high up.” Takoma Park experienced rapid growth in the following years: It had 235 houses by 1889 and became the largest town in Montgomery County by 1913.
Takoma Park was home to pioneer horticulturist Benjamin Y. Morrison, who is known for developing the Glen Dale Azaleas. His beautiful hybrid azaleas can be found throughout the city, resulting in its reputation as “Azalea City.” Today, Takoma Park has a population of about 17,800 and covers a total area of 2 square miles.
