The San Diego Open is a professional tennis event that is also known as the Southern California Open and the Mercury Insurance Open. It is associated with the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). The open has been held in Southern California since 1971 when the famous Billie Jean King won the event. The tournament was not held in 2008 and 2009. The matches take place in Carlsbad outside of San Diego at the La Costa Resort & Spa. The event takes place over a seven-day period during which several tennis-related events are held.
