Chelsea is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New York City to have kept its original name. It was named after the Soldier's Hospital in London, by a British entrepreneur who bought about ten blocks of land. The neighborhood has undergone many transformations since that time. Anyone who has visited Chelsea can recognize its current impressive art culture. The artistic vibe of Chelsea stems from Hotel Chelsea, built in 1884, which was designed to provide art and culture for all class levels. More from this guide...

Chelsea looks a lot different today than it has throughout the years. In the mid-1800s the neighborhood was filled with warehouses and lumber yards, thanks to the railroad that ran through the community. The world's first elevated train significantly impacted the region as well. Built in 1869, the train brought industrialization and affordable housing to the area. This train is essential to modern day Chelsea as it's now the famous High Line.

In the mid to late 1900s, Chelsea started becoming gentrified, bringing it closer to the artsy and upscale neighborhood known to modern-day residents and visitors. Over time, the community has spread from its original ten blocks to a much more significant chunk of lower and mid-Manhattan.

What time of year is best to visit Chelsea, New York?

The fall undoubtedly offers the best weather to visit Chelsea. The weather tends to be mild, and with the leaves changing, it's a beautiful time to be in the city. Don't wait too late in the fall to visit, since once the weather starts to turn, you will have to bundle up to enjoy many of the outdoor activities in the city. Be prepared, however, to pay premium prices to stay in Chelsea during the fall because of the beautiful weather and the fall festivities.

The spring and summer are also pleasant times to visit Chelsea, but the weather can be unpredictable during the spring. It may be cold and rainy, or it might be perfect, but it's hard to predict. During the summer, you have to battle hot temperatures, but it's a great excuse to get outside and walk along the Hudson River or visit the High Line.

If you want to get the most affordable rates on hotels, head to Chelsea during the winter, when the hotels tend to be less pricey. Although it is cold, there are still plenty of things to do in and around Chelsea. Chelsea is not far from the Rockefeller Center, where you can see the famous Christmas Tree and go ice skating.

You Won’t Run Out of Things to Do in Chelsea, New York

Tourists flock to Chelsea for the art culture, restaurants, and the charming atmosphere of this exciting neighborhood. The first thing on many tourists lists is to see the Chelsea High Line. This repurposed elevated railroad was almost torn down, until a group called Friends of the High Line, petitioned to keep it open and transform it into a park. In the late 1990s, two Chelsea residents started advocating to change the railway. By the early 2000s, a competition to redesign the High Line commenced. Through a massive renovation, the project was finally completed in 2014.

The finished project is an elevated park on the old railway. The High Line spans almost one and a half miles, with stunning views of the river and Manhattan. It's filled with flowers, greenery, and outdoor art. Some of the best restaurants and bars in Manhattan have popped up in the area around the High Line. On a sunny day, you can explore the High Line and then stop for a bite to eat or enjoy a drink at happy hour in one of the bars around the park.

While you're out and about, head to the Chelsea Piers. This set of piers was used for large ships, including the Lusitania, in the early 1900s and would have been the end point for the Titanic. The Piers are now used by the Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment Complex, with a production studio where Law and Order SVU is filmed, and sports facilities including a bowling alley, batting cage, rock climbing wall, and ice skating rinks.

The Chelsea Market is another prime tourist attraction in the area. This enclosed market is a paradise for foodies, with over 35 food vendors. While you're at the Chelsea Market, make sure you check out the iconic fountain which was created with drill bits and piping from the former Nabisco Factory.

The Chelsea Market also offers its visitors opportunities for shopping. You can buy a new outfit at Anthropologie, pick up a fresh baguette and bottle of wine, and be ready for a dinner party that night. While you're at the Chelsea Market, also make sure to check out Artists and Fleas, which showcases art, design, fashion, and vintage art and apparel, all from independent creators.

Finally, don't forget to check out the art galleries in Chelsea. They are hard to miss with the high saturation of galleries in the area, including many world-famous galleries. Throughout the year, the neighborhood hosts many art festivals, exhibits, and gallery-hops for both locals and tourists to enjoy.
