Jesuit Fathers founded The University of San Francisco as San Francisco's premier institution of higher education in October 1855. Initially, however, the college was known as St. Ignatius Academy, and was established in a 26-feet-long by 16-feet-wide building. The college was opened under the tutelage of Father Anthony Maraschi, S.J., founder and first president.
