Belgium has a rich heritage, scenic beauty, and old-world charm that makes it an ideal destination. The community got its start in 1848 when settlers native to the European Belgium fled the economic hardships overseas and chose Wisconsin as their new home. Through perseverance and hard work, they carved out a new frontier and made livings as fishermen, lumberjacks, farmers, cheese-makers, and merchants.
In 1857, a post office was established in the budding community, making Belgium official. Today, the village is home to the International Luxembourg American Cultural Center as well as one of the largest populations of people with Luxembourg heritage. Over the years, the community has earned the nickname “America's New Luxembourg,” and reminders of this rich heritage abound in Belgium's historic downtown, immigrant stone houses, and St. Mary's Church.
Whatever your reason for visiting Belgium, Wisconsin, it's important to find the perfect hotel that allows you to explore everything this delightful village has to offer.
When should you visit Belgium, WI?
Wisconsin has a continental humid climate, which means that it experiences cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. Given Belgium's proximity to Lake Michigan, the village tends to have more snow and colder temperatures than other parts of the state, which can make visiting during the winter months tricky. Still, if you love cross country skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling, a winter getaway might just be what you're looking for!
The best time to visit Belgium is in the fall after summer's heat and humidity have cooled off. Temperatures drop gradually from mid-September through early November, settling in the upper 50s by late fall. One of the benefits of planning a fall trip to Belgium is fewer tourist crowds, but the area does attract passersby hoping to catch glimpses of the changing leaves.
Spring is another good time to visit Belgium if you want to avoid peak tourist season. Hotel rates remain low until late May, giving you plenty of options for budgeting your trip. The downside, however, is that spring ushers in frequent rain showers, so be sure to bring an umbrella and pack accordingly.
Peak tourist season runs from June through the end of August. Despite summer being peak season, however, Wisconsin rarely feels overcrowded. Simply book your hotel room in advance and enjoy the beautiful weather.
