Brent, situated in the southern part of Bibb County, Alabama, has a history as rich as the soil upon which it stands. Established in 1898 alongside the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio Rail line, the town got its name from Brent H. Armstrong, a railroad surveyor. Incorporated in 1913, Brent adopted the mayor-council form of government with Mayor A. J. Hardin at the helm. From its humble beginnings with a population of 250, Brent grew to become the largest municipality in Bibb County by 2011, with over 4,500 residents. However, Brent's journey has not been without adversity. On May 27, 1973, a devastating category 4 tornado ravaged Brent, along with Centreville, Montevallo, and Greensboro, destroying 90 percent of the city. The tornado wiped out over 12,000 acres of timber and demolished more than 500 buildings, injuring 72 people. The largest church in Brent, Brent Baptist, crumbled under the storm's might while its congregation took shelter in the basement. The following Sunday, amidst the ruins, Reverend David McGowin delivered a sermon that symbolized the community's unbreakable spirit. Mayor Stripling's words, "We are a strong Christian community full of caring, hard-working people. You can knock us down, but you can't stop us," echo the city's resolve. The citizens of Brent united to rebuild their community, adopting the motto "Proven by Tempest" and annually commemorating "Twister Day" to honor their resilience.
