The Marion Carll Farm is a historic home that was once open to the public and has a contentious history. The property, dating back to 1701, is on the National Registry of Historic Places and includes an 1860 farmhouse, garage, smokehouse, milk house, horse barn, carriage house, and sheep barn. The Commack County School District took over the property in 1969 when the owner bequeathed it to the district on the condition that it be used as a historic site and educational farm.
Marion Carll was born on the farm and lived in the Commack area throughout her life, becoming very involved in local education. In her will, she stated that she wanted to gift the property to the school district so that it would be used for educational purposes and to prevent it from falling into the hands of a real estate investor who would develop the property for profit.
In 2012, after the district stopped using the property as intended by Marion Carll, her family sued to take back ownership. For years, the property has been the subject of a bitter legal battle between Marion Carll's descendants and the school district. However, on Jan. 18, 2017, a judge ruled in favor of the school district, allowing it to keep ownership of the property. It is unclear if the school district will use the property as intended by Marion Carll, who was passionate about giving back to the community and preserving historic sites for the purpose of education.
