Dickinson sits on a tract of land the Mexican government gifted to John Dickinson, a hero of the Texas Revolution, in 1824. He enjoyed a quiet life there until other settlers built homes along the banks of Dickinson Bayou in the 1850s. By 1860, the Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad stopped at Dickinson, fueling growth.
Despite steady growth due to its convenient transport, close proximity to large cities, and fertile farming soil, Dickinson wasn't incorporated until 1977. The city was devastated by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, but continues to forge ahead and welcome new residents and tourists with open arms.
What time of year is best to visit Dickinson, TX?
A summer getaway might seem appealing, but resist the impulse when traveling to Dickinson. During the city's long summer season, which stretches from May to September, temperatures and accommodation prices are at their peak. While the water's refreshing when temperatures sit in the low to high 80s, you'll struggle to find space on the sand. You'll also face high levels of traffic on your way to the beach.
You'll have a much better time in October, November, March, or April, the optimum months for Dickinson travel. Temperatures are still warm, in the low to high 70s depending on your time of travel, but not as oppressive as during the peak of summer. Accommodation prices also fall so you'll get a much better rate and enjoy your time in Dickinson and its surrounds without the crowds.
If you're a real bargain hunter, don't dismiss a winter getaway. After the tourist spike of the festive season, you'll get some great deals on Dickinson hotels. With average highs in the low 60s, it's too cold to hit the beach, but you won't mind that if you're staying within the city limits.
