Later, the area was settled by Europeans who met the Native American population with hostility. Wars between the new settlers and the Native Americans went on for years. The key to the town's settlement and development is said to have been made possible by the town's focus on transportation. New Stanton is on what was known as the Whiskey Trail. Grains were too difficult to ship over the mountains, so they opted to distill those grains into whiskey both for easier transportation and to have a better selling good to trade with in nearby Pittsburgh.
