Hiking the Walls of Jericho is one of the iconic experiences near Scottsboro. The hike down the walls of the canyon is often rated as one of the best hikes in the country. Legend has it that Davy Crockett used to hunt in the canyon. A hike into the Walls of Jericho will enable you to discover the natural beauty of the Paint Rock River and its waterfalls.
This is an expert-level hike, so don't attempt it without some planning. The 6-mile hike into the canyon is fairly relaxed. It's the hike back out again that proves more challenging. Many visitors choose to hike into the canyon and camp there overnight. The bottom of the canyon features the main bowl as well as steps that continue upstream. Visitors rave about the cerulean blue water in the pool that fills before plunging into a waterfall.
For an easier adventure that kids and parents alike will enjoy, check out the Sauta Cave National Wildlife Refuge. Known as the Blowing Wind Cave National Wildlife Refuge until 1999, the 264-acre refuge provides protection to the endangered gray and Indiana bat and its habitat.
Each summer, the cave serves as a roosting site for 200,000 to 400,000 bats. Kids will love the sight of the roosting bats bursting from the entrance of the cave on summer nights. People gather outside the mouth of the cave every evening throughout the summer to experience this sight firsthand. We suggest arriving about 30 minutes before dark on an evening in July or August. Just as the daylight gives out, you'll experience the sight of the bats emerging from the cave and swooping harmlessly around the area before they take off for the evening.
The cave is also a great option for families with kids because the site is easily accessible. Located right off Highway 72, the cave is only about a 100-yard walk from the parking area and offers an observation platform for easy viewing.
