Snellville got its start when two English settlers, Thomas Snell and James Sawyer, moved to the area and opened a supply store. Travelers would often stop and buy supplies from "Snell and Sawyer's," and the store eventually became known as "Snellville" in advertising campaigns. Although the friends' partnership eventually dissolved, Sawyer kept the original store and opened the community's first post office in 1885, naming it after the store. Snellville received its official city charter in 1923, and growth remained slow until the 1960s when it started to attract new businesses and residents as a suburb of Atlanta.

Today, Snellville is a diverse city that's home to numerous parks, craft breweries, flea markets, and antique shops. Commuters can be in central Atlanta in about 40 minutes, making Snellville an ideal home base if you're traveling to the area. Whatever your reasons for visiting Snellville, it's important that you find the right hotel that allows you to enjoy everything Metro Atlanta has to offer.

Best Time to Visit Snellville, GA

Snellville has a humid subtropical climate with hot, clammy summers and fairly mild winters. Despite highs averaging in the upper 80s, summer is Metro Atlanta's peak tourist season. Naturally, this influx of tourists results in higher hotel rates and more competition for vacancies. Therefore, be sure to book your room weeks or even months in advance to get a good deal.

Staying in one of the outlying communities such as Snellville is also a great way to avoid skyrocketing rates throughout Atlanta. You can enjoy more affordable room rates while still experiencing key events such as the Atlanta Food & Wine Festival or Atlanta International Fashion Week.

Fall is an ideal time to visit Metro Atlanta if you're not too keen on its humid summers. From September through November, the weather averages in the mid-60s to the low 80s, which is ideal for sightseeing. You also won't be dealing with long lines at area attractions, as local children are back in school and the tourist crowds start to taper off by late August. If you're visiting during Taste of Atlanta, Music Midtown, or another popular event, be sure to reserve your hotel early.

Although Metro Atlanta experiences mild winters, the weather is unpredictable and can be rough, especially when an ice storm hits. While this isn't the best news for sightseers, winter travelers can enjoy rock-bottom rates throughout Metro Atlanta, meaning you'll get the most bang for your buck in Snellville. Just be sure to pack plenty of layers of clothing and a winter coat.

April through early May brings thunderstorms to Snellville and the greater Atlanta area. If you don't mind the occasional storm, however, you can enjoy deep discounts on hotels throughout the region. With the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, the Atlanta Film Festival, and the Atlanta Jazz Festival's 31 Days of Jazz in full swing, you certainly won't be missing out on anything.
