Situated in the beautiful San Fernando Valley, Sylmar is the northernmost part of Los Angeles, earning it the nickname “The Top of Los Angeles.” It was incorporated as a city in 1874 and was originally called Morningside. Later, it was renamed “Sylmar,” a combination of Latin words meaning “sea of trees.” In the late 1890s, the Los Angeles Olive Growers Association transformed 2,000 acres of land around the city into an olive plantation. The property had 200,000 olive trees by 1898 and became the world's largest olive grove by 1906.
Despite experiencing several disasters between the 1970s and the 2000s, Sylmar managed to sustain steady population and economic growth. Today, it's a modern city with a population of more than 100,000.
