When to Visit Santa Fe, NM

Santa Fe has very hot summers and mildly cold winters. The best time to visit the city depends largely on what you want to do and what sort of weather you prefer.

Between June and August, temperatures reach highs of almost 90 degrees. These months can be quite humid because the city receives the most rain during this season. It's not the most popular time to visit, though, which means you will likely be able to get a few great hotel deals. If the heat doesn't bother you, summer could be a great time to visit Santa Fe. Just don't forget to pack your hat and sunscreen.

The most popular time to visit Santa Fe is between September and November. This season brings festivals, like Santa Fe Fiesta and the Santa Fe Wine and Cheese Festival, which draw a lot of tourists to the city. During this time, you can enjoy sunny days with temperatures around 65 degrees. The temperature drops in the evening and can get as cold as 40 degrees. If you plan to visit the city during these months, prepare for higher hotel prices and be sure to book well in advance.

If you enjoy skiing, winter is a great time to visit Santa Fe. It's only a short drive to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, an excellent place to ski between December and February. While this isn't as popular a time of year as the fall, it is still quite busy with tourists. Prices will remain relatively high, and you'll have to allow yourself plenty of time to book if you'd like to get a good deal.

If you want to visit the city when there are fewer tourists and score yourself some off-season prices, visit Santa Fe between March and May. The weather is beginning to improve, but you'll still experience cool evenings, so pack accordingly.

Best Discounts in Santa Fe, NM

You can find a variety of great discounts available in Santa Fe. If you are a AAA member, check out the Comfort Suites right in downtown Santa Fe. They also offer a senior discount. You can receive up to 10 percent off your room price if you bring your AAA card or have proof of your senior status. The hotel has an indoor pool, spa, and fitness center. Rooms also include a complimentary continental breakfast.

If you're headed to Santa Fe with a large group, the Lodge at Santa Fe offers great group discounts. If you book between November 1 and March 31, you will receive one complimentary room for every 20 rooms you book per night. Each guest in the group will also receive complimentary drink tickets. No matter when you book, always ask what their group rate is. Even during peak months like August, the hotel has offered discounts of up to 50 percent on each room.

Best Value Options in Santa Fe, NM

It's located right in the historic district of the city and is surrounded by tons of shopping and dining options. During the winter months, they offer a shuttle to the ski area. The hotel has two restaurants and a cafe on-site in case you want to have a relaxing night in. There's also an outdoor pool, a spa tub, and a fitness center, so you can stay fit during your trip. For a small added fee, you can even bring your pet with you.

If you enjoy casinos, the Cities Of Gold Casino Hotel is great value for the money, especially if you win some during your stay. The hotel also has a nightclub and three restaurants. Your stay includes a full hot and cold buffet breakfast, too.

Best Restaurants in Santa Fe, NM

Santa Fe has so many restaurants, it can be hard to decide which is the best. Whether you're looking for some authentic Mexican food, a bit of Southwestern cuisine, or you want to indulge in a fine dining experience, you'll find it all in Santa Fe.

If it's authentic Mexican you're after, head to Cafe Pasqual's. All of the meat and produce that they use is organic and naturally raised. They're open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and serve delicious Mexican classics all day long. It's a really popular place no matter the time of day, so be prepared to wait. It'll be worth it. Their mole enchiladas are a hit with the locals. The breakfast menu offers Mexican-style pancakes and mouthwateringly good barbacoa and eggs.

If you came to Santa Fe to sample some Southwestern-style food, go to The Shed. It's located a block away from the plaza and is open for lunch and dinner. The pollo adobo is made with a house-made marinade, and you'll be begging for the recipe. The southwest grilled shrimp is another option if you want to sample some southwest seasonings.

For fine dining with a twist, be sure to book a table at The Compound Restaurant on Canyon Road. Chef Mark Kiffin has delicately balanced fine dining fare with southwestern flavors. The menu is seasonal and uses high-end ingredients like foie gras and tuna and mixes them with unique spices. The restaurant also puts on menus for holidays and can cater private dining if you want something really special. Dining at The Compound Restaurant is truly an experience — just be sure to make a reservation a few nights in advance.

Whether you're looking for a luxury getaway in Santa Fe or you want a simple and affordable place to sleep so that you can splurge on sightseeing and great food, you'll find a hotel to suit your needs in downtown Santa Fe.

Travel overview of Santa Fe, NM

Santa Fe has long been one of the United States' favorite destinations among upscale travelers, mainly because of its chic flair. Its irresistible appeal is based on firm-grounds: Santa Fe is one of the nation's earliest and most beautiful cities. Santa Fe has been built by the Hispanic missionaries long before Pilgrims stepped foot. Summer sunsets make Santa Fe even more beautiful, with pinks and vermilions seen all over the sky, far above the Hemez Mountains. The capital of New Mexico sits high at the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, blessed with the beauty of numerous baroque churches and adobe houses. Newer galleries have been erected, attracting more and more art-lovers worldwide. About 1.5 million tourists descend annually from the rest of North America to grapple what remains of the classic beauty. Though much has been replaced by the urban sprawl across town, Santa Fe still has a lot to like. On most evenings of summer, Santa Fe plays host to numerous opera, some of which are held outdoors.
