The small town of Fillmore is located in the Santa Clara River Valley and has always been known as an area with rich soil, perfect for agricultural endeavors. The historic downtown area that still has large portions standing today originated in 1887 when Southern Pacific built their railroad through the heart of it. The superintendent of the railroad at the time was J.A. Fillmore, and it was from him that the town received its name.
The area saw its first European explorers in the early 1700s when the Spanish Portola expedition sent explorers inward into the other areas of California. Though the area was noted by explorers, it was not officially founded until the 1887 expansion of the railroad. The city finally saw incorporation in 1914 after a vigorous campaign by the town paper and local business owners.
The area is known for its many Orange Groves and its unique historic district located primarily along Central Street. Even though the downtown area has been well preserved, most of the rest of the city is fairly new with many of the homes being constructed in the 1970s and later.
The city is also known for its location close to the Los Padres National Forest and Sespe Condor Sanctuary, home to the recovering California Condor. Agriculture is the primary industry of the area with the most prevalent crops being oranges, lemons, avocados, and other forms of orchard farming.
The city is also now known as a popular tourist location with many visitors flocking to the Railroad Visitor Center to see the 90-foot fully operational train turntable as well as multiple restored railroad cars. Another popular tourist stop is the downtown area where there are multiple museums and turn-of-the-century restored buildings such as the 1906 Craftsman-style Hinckley House, which was the residence of the area's first dentist and pharmacist.
