It was meant to deter the Confederate Army. However, the explosives malfunctioned, and the coal miners got caught in the crater instead.
Once you are done exploring the area's Civil War history, you can learn military history with a trip to Fort Lee. The active Army base is home to a number of different schools. It is also home to two significant museums. One is the Army Women's Museum. It traces the history of women in the Army. The museum is open to the public, but you need access to the base. It operates Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on all federal holidays except for Veteran's Day. Some of the exhibits include the Origins of Service that explains how women supported troops in both the American Revolution and the Civil War as camp followers.
Colonial history fans can make the short trip down 460 and across the James River using the Ferry to reach Jamestown. There are two different settlements to explore at Jamestown. One is a replica of what the area looked like and allows visitors to learn from interpreters as they explore the buildings and ships along the water. Just up the road from the replica is the actual Jamestown site. This is an active archeological dig site that visitors are able to visit and learn about some of the artifacts that have been found in the area.
The county of the same name surrounds the village of Prince George. Just outside of the town is the back gate to Fort Lee Army Base. The city of Hopewell is just a few miles up the road. State Route 460 takes visitors from Prince George down to State Route 58 that leads you into Virginia Beach.
