"The Mall contains many of the museums of the Smithsonian"
The National Mall, comprising the center of Washington, D.C., officially extends from the Washington Monument to the U.S. Capitol Building. However, the entire area from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol Building, along with some buildings to the north and south, are commonly referred to as the National Mall. The Mall contains many of the museums of the Smithsonian, most open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily except for December 25. The National Air and Space Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery of Art, and more are all a part of this institution. The White House, U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, and many more government buildings are in or near the Mall too, some of which you can tour. The US State Department, Department of the Interior, Department of Agriculture, and more have their offices and headquarters here near the Mall. And there are hundreds of monuments and memorials in the Mall and surrounding city dedicated to presidents, famous persons, veterans, and more that you can view for the most part at any time. Some of the most famous include the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the World War II Memorial. These attractions are all free to view or tour if they are a part of the Mall complex. To access these attractions, you can use the WMATA Metro and bus lines, or parking garages and some limited street parking throughout Washington D.C. More from this guide...
