If you're looking for a fun and interesting vacation, head to Arlington, Virginia. Arlington is only about five miles from Washington, DC, so it's a great option for anyone who wants to visit the nation's capital. The city has a long history: the first mansion in the area was built by Gerard Alexander in 1740. The ruins of the mansion were restored and are now at the Reagan International Airport. During the Civil War, there were about 20 occupied forts in the area, and by the end of the war, the city and surrounding land was in shambles. Today, Arlington is the home of the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery. More from this guide...

Arlington, VA in a nutshell

Arlington is home to USA's globally famous memorials and monuments but its many other facets make the city unpredictable yet amazingly fun. You surely cannot resist the charm and will go on a side trip to town when you visit the Washington area. Don't worry about gas price hikes as you can practically walk around the city. Among the popular landmarks are the Arlington House and The Robert E. Lee Memorial stationed inside the Arlington National Cemetery where prominent figures like Robert and John F. Kennedy are buried. The burial ground also gives shelter to Tomb of the Unknowns that recognizes the unknown soldiers. Other most visited sites in the neighborhood are Iwo Jima Memorial, U.S. Air Force Memorial and Fort Myer. Arlington also houses Pentagon, the globe's largest office building. The pentagon-shaped edifice is the home of the US Department of Defense. It has five floors and five ring corridors in every level. In addition, the oldest building in the city holds the Arlington Historical Museum, the only office that is open to the public without asking for a single penny. "Walkable, Fun, Plenty to Do"
Score 5.0 / 5

Shirlington Village is very walkable. We were able to walk to all of our wedding events, aside from the wedding itself, and we were even able to get our hair and nails done locally. The restaurants are delicious, particularly the Thai place, and the bar scene made for a fun bachelorette party.

Alice Rose L., from 02-Jul-2016
"Great Area"
Score 4.0 / 5

Arlington is a great area with plenty to do--shopping, dinning out and wide variety of places to choose from.

Derrick H., from 30-Mar-2016
"Historic, Wonderful City "
Score 5.0 / 5

Arlington is centrally located to many things, most notable Washington, DC. There's also the historic National Cemetery, The Pentagon, and plenty of parks and memorials.

Brenda H., from 15-Sep-2015
"Beautiful, but Crowded"
Score 5.0 / 5

The city is beautiful, but I wouldn't live there because there's just way too many people. It's impossible to find a good parking, people are rude, and everything is overpriced. The metro was an experience. It's better to walk and commute than driving. All in all, it was OK.

Unknown U., from 07-Sep-2015
"Very Happy"
Score 5.0 / 5

The Silver Line Diner in Arlington was terrific and the Arlington house was great.

Shelly B L., from 20-Aug-2015
"Great City"
Score 5.0 / 5

Lots of restaurant and bar options nearby, Metro and buses get you everywhere without traffic hassles (no mean feat in the Washington DC area), attractive clean city with class (love the brick sidewalks), and boatloads of attractive and friendly young people.

Michael F., from 09-Oct-2014
"Road Congestion"
Score 5.0 / 5

We liked leaving Arlington very much. The traffic was horrendous. Ironically the people there were very nice, despite the rainy weather in March and the speeding cars.
