The Potomac center point is approximately 2 miles northwest of Congressional Country Club and 5 miles south of Shady Grove Adventis Hospital.

In Maryland's Montgomery County, you'll find the quiet and affluent community of Potomac. In fact, Potomac was once recognized as the single most affluent town in the entire country. In addition to that, it's also the seventh most educated small town in America, according to Forbes. Because of this, it's no small coincidence that many residents of Potomac commute to nearby Washington, D.C., for work. Still, Potomac isn't all about work, as it's home to quite a few attractions that travelers from all over can come to enjoy. More from this guide...

The first European settlement in the area can be traced back to 1714 when Edward Offutt utilized a land grant gifted to him by Lord Baltimore. Since the land was near a Native American trade route, the area became known as Offutt's Crossroads as it grew in size. By 1881, Offutt's Crossroads had grown into a thriving community, but there were too many nearby towns with “Crossroads” in their names. That's why, in 1881, this community changed its name to Potomac. In the mid-20th century, it transitioned from agrarian to suburban and has continued to grow ever since.

To experience everything Potomac has to offer, you'll need someplace to rest and recharge in between your adventures, like a quality hotel. Whether you're looking for something on the affordable side or something downright luxurious, Potomac has plenty of options to choose from. With the diversity available among its hotel options, you can embark on your journey to Potomac knowing you've booked the exact kind of experience you want.

When to Visit Potomac, MD

The seasonal differences are quite drastic in Potomac, so you'll need to plan your trip accordingly if you want to get the most out of your experience. If you're looking for warm weather, for instance, late spring to early fall is the best time to travel. The hottest month is July, with average highs around 87 degrees and average lows around 66 degrees. Winters can get cold, but even then, Potomac's climate is far better than some of this town's more northern counterparts. Average mean temperatures are only below freezing in January, and average lows below freezing are confined to the winter months.

While you may be able to deal with standard temperatures, it's important to remember that moisture in the air can make all the difference. Similar to nearby Washington, D.C., Potomac can get very humid in the summer. In fact, the average relative humidity from May to October is greater than 60 percent. If you're more concerned about avoiding the rain, avoid planning your trip for the early spring. After winter is over, March hits with a high daily chance of rain at 23 percent. In contrast, January, November, and September feature the lowest daily chances of rain at 14 percent, 16 percent, and 17 percent, respectively.

Despite the rain and the humidity, summer is still the most popular season to travel. If this sounds fitting for you, keep in mind that hotel prices are going to be a bit higher than usual. The slowest season, on the other hand, is fall, so you'll be able to find some of the best deals at that time. Just be wary of the colder weather mixed with the occasional high chance of rain.
