Unlike most of the nation's proud old towns, Pittsburgh gladly traded its historic Victorian buildings for steel and gravel. Pittsburgh was once the nation's leading producer of glass, iron, and steel, thanks to Andrew Carnegie, who was once the world's richest man. Pittsburgh saw another facelift in the 1960's, where abandoned steel mills were demolished for sleeker skyscrapers and greener spaces. Pittsburgh has established itself as a destination to be reckoned with, one of the nation's most livable cities. The city is now at par with the most attractive American cities, after decades of struggling with dirt and pollution. Still, much of its ironclad façade are seen throughout the waterfront, with a pre-revolutionary fortification, two inclined railways, 446 bridges, and 151 high-rise buildings. The meshwork made Pittsburgh known throughout as "The Steel City" and "The City of Bridges". Pittsburgh is known for the Golden Triangle, an appealing 10-block district, which is surrounded by bequests. The buildings of Heinz food producers, Frick Coal Merchants, and the Mellon Bankers still stand stalwartly as heirlooms of wealthy forefathers. The small-town feel, amidst displays of occasional steel, attests to the city's historical resurgence.
The large and modern city is known for its steel and 446 bridges running across innumerable hills and three major rivers. Hotels in Pittsburgh are therefore scattered across the city with excellent communication facilities. If the National Negro Opera Company is the first Afro-American initiative towards opera in the United States, the city had the rich commissioning cultural centers like the Benedum Center and Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts in the 19th century. Andy Warhol Museum and Toonseum are popular museums among many others. The world's largest convention on furry fictional animal characters is held here every year in the month of June/July.
