"Just south of Independence Avenue"
L'Enfant Plaza is located near the center of Washington, D.C. just south of Independence Avenue between the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building. Positioned around it are several commercial buildings, a government building, and "La Promenade," a shopping mall. When fully completed, it is to contain a sculptural glass entrance, environmental systems and materials, and facilities that will greatly help local residents and visitors. It is easily accessed by the Metro, with the blue, orange, yellow, and green lines converging here. Nearby attractions in D.C. include the many museums of the Smithsonian, most open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day but Christmas, with free admission, which are spread out around the city. Or you can explore the historic neighborhoods in the D.C. area, such as Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, Adams Morgan, and more, with their restaurants, clubs, and unique historic sites. Just travel around many of these communities to see 18th and 19th century houses still standing. The White House, U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, and many more government buildings are here too, some of which you can tour. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts offers tours and food whenever you like, with great shows on many evenings. And there are hundreds of monuments and memorials in the city dedicated to presidents, famous persons, veterans, and more that you can view for the most part at any time. To access these attractions, you can use the WMATA Metro and bus lines, or parking garages and some limited street parking throughout the city. More from this guide...
