Four miles northeast of central D.C., Gallaudet University has taught students who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as some who can hear, in many fields since 1864. It is the world's premier university serving this type of student. If you would like to visit Kendall Green, Gallaudet University's campus, tours are conducted Monday through Friday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., beginning at the Visitors Center in the lobby of the Edward Miner Gallaudet Memorial Building. The tours are conducted in sign language, so request a voice interpreter beforehand online if you will need one, when you register for your tour. Other attractions nearby include the Connersmith Gallery, featuring great selections of contemporary art in D.C. Also, there is the Atlas Performing Arts Center, which puts on a variety of shows for your viewing. Some museums are not too far away as well, such as the National Postal Museum, of the Smithsonian, open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day but Christmas, with free admission. Or the National Guard Memorial Museum, open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
