Located in a bustling area that never sleeps, Columbia University's grand and historic campus embraces academic rigor, a rich tradition, and a diverse cultural environment. This Ivy League university, with its stunning architecture and green spaces, is in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to combine the excitement of city life with the intellectual stimulation of a world-class institution. The university comprises twenty schools, offering a multitude of undergraduate and graduate programs. Some groundbreaking research includes advancements in earth observation, space studies, and collaborations with leading tech firms. The world's most influential individuals have been part of the university as students, teachers, and staff. Columbia's influence is worldwide, from Founding Fathers of the United States and US presidents to foreign heads of state and United Nations secretaries-general. Its graduates have also made significant contributions to the arts and sciences, as evidenced by the large number of Nobel laureates, National Academy of Sciences members, Olympic medalists, Academy Award winners, and Pulitzer Prize recipients associated with the university. Columbia's Morningside Heights campus, designed by McKim, Mead & White, is a hub of academic activity and community engagement. From the iconic Low Memorial Library to the historic Butler Library, it reflects tradition and modernity, providing students and faculty an environment for learning and collaboration. Beyond Morningside Heights, Columbia's influence extends across New York City and worldwide. Affiliated with renowned medical institutions like NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and conducting research in fields ranging from international relations to particle physics, Columbia remains at the forefront of global scholarship and discovery. Columbia University in Manhattan boasts a tapestry of traditions that shape its community life. The Varsity Show stands out as a historic annual event, established in 1893, and has evolved into an anticipated full-length musical production crafted by undergraduates every April. This creative work humorously critiques aspects of Columbia's environment and has seen the participation of notable alums, including Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who have left an indelible mark on the arts. Shows like "The Streets of New York" have even transcended campus boundaries, earning awards off-Broadway. The festive spirit continues with the Tree Lighting at College Walk, a relatively new tradition since 1998, where the community gathers to light up the trees along the campus walkway, signaling the onset of the holiday season. This event, complete with hot chocolate and live performances, leads into the historic Yule Log ceremony – a throwback to the early American era that was resurrected in the early 20th century. This ceremony sees students march in period attire, carrying a log to be burned amidst carol singing, creating a warm, nostalgic close to the year. These traditions weave a rich cultural fabric that enhances the Columbia experience for the community, faculty, and alumni alike. Visitors to Columbia University in Manhattan, NYC will find diverse accommodations to suit their needs. From cozy inns and convenient motels to luxurious hotels and spacious suites, there's a perfect place for every traveler. The Inside Scoop by our Local Expert

An Ivy League private school in New York, Columbia University has been a fixture of the city for more than 200 years and is, in fact, the oldest higher learning institution in the entire state of New York. Located in the neighborhood of Morningside Heights, Columbia University occupies a campus that measures approximately 32 acres, or six conventional city blocks. The university also owns several undergraduate dormitories that are located outside of the campus, but still in Morningside Heights.Today, Columbia University is home to about 100 different academic departments and 4,000 undergraduate students. The school also is home to a unique feature known as the Tunnels. Referring to an intricate series of underground tunnels beneath the campus grounds, the Tunnels -- now off-limits to the public -- were used for everything from transporting coal to different buildings to connecting laboratories and rooms that were used during the historic Manhattan Project. Above ground, Columbia University still holds many interesting sights and sounds. Student meet on the Steps, which connect the lower and upper parts of the campus grounds, to meet and hang out between classes. And near the center of the campus, where the school's giant sundial used to stand, is a makeshift podium where students gather to make speeches.

Columbia University: A Journey Through Time

Columbia University's story begins with a colonial community's dream of establishing a learning center in the Province of New York. Discussions for such an institution started as far back as 1704, gaining momentum with the founding of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) in neighboring New Jersey. It wasn't until 1751 that the assembly of New York appointed a commission to direct funds towards establishing a new college, laying the foundation for what would become Columbia University. With New York City as the federal and state capital, Columbia thrived under the patronage of influential figures like George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, cementing its reputation as a leading learning institution. The 19th century saw Columbia evolve and adapt to changing times. In 1813, the college merged its medical school with The College of Physicians and Surgeons, laying the groundwork for future advancements in healthcare education. Despite periods of stagnation, Columbia underwent significant changes in the latter half of the century, including a move to a new campus in Morningside Heights in 1896. Under the leadership of Seth Low and Nicholas Murray Butler, Columbia University flourished in the early 20th century, embracing a multidisciplinary approach to education and research. The university's commitment to excellence earned it recognition as a significant center for intellectual inquiry and innovation. Columbia University has a rich academic history as well, with its researchers and scholars playing a crucial role in groundbreaking scientific discoveries. These include advancements in brain-computer interface, laser and maser technologies, nuclear magnetic resonance, and nuclear fission reactions. The university was also instrumental in planning and researching the Manhattan Project during World War II. Its academic achievements extend beyond the sciences, with the university annually awarding the esteemed Pulitzer Prize, further underlining its commitment to recognizing and fostering intellectual and creative talent.  As Columbia University continues to evolve in the 21st century, it remains committed to its mission of advancing knowledge and fostering intellectual growth. With a rich history, a dynamic campus, and a global network of scholars, Columbia University stands as a beacon of excellence in education and research, poised to shape future generations.
