The area was originally occupied by the Huron people. However, by 1650, they'd succumbed to European diseases and the invading Iroquois. The Mississauga people thrived on the land. From 1781, they began selling parcels of land to the British government. By the mid-19th century, all the Mississauga people had relocated to the Six Nations Reserve.

Georgetown's name pays homage to George Kennedy, an entrepreneur who built several mills and other businesses when he became one of the community's first settlers in the 1820s. Many other enterprising individuals moved to Georgetown in the subsequent years, including the Barber brothers, who started the local paper-making industry, and Philo Dayfoot, who started the local leather sector.

Georgetown was incorporated as a village in 1865. It had grown to an incorporated town of more than 2,000 residents by 1921. In 1974, Georgetown became part of the new town, Halton Hills. Today, more than 42,000 people call Georgetown home.

When to Visit Georgetown, ON

Georgetown is best experienced in late April to May and September through October. During these times, you enjoy warm weather without the summer crowds or high summer accommodation prices. Expect daily highs in the mid-50s to high 60s during these shoulder season months. It can get chilly once the sun sets, though, so make sure you bring a jacket for the cool nights.

While Georgetown doesn't attract the high tourist volumes of Toronto, summer is still the community's peak season. It's not hard to see why, with daytime temperatures typically hovering in the mid- to high 70s. However, heatwaves can send the mercury soaring into the mid-90s.

If price matters most, pack a coat and enjoy the winter weather after New Year. Hotel prices fall to their lowest rates during this time, right along with the temperature! Roughly 28 inches of snow falls every January and February, so you'll need to bundle up.

Luxury Hotels in Georgetown, Ontario

The hotels in Georgetown itself are mostly midscale. For true indulgence, travel outside the community to one of the following high-end hotels.

Hilton Mississauga/Meadowvale is a luxury hotel, but it's also a welcoming one for travelers of all ages. The rooms and common areas are beautiful, but this isn't the kind of posh place where you need to worry about your kids' exuberance. They'll love the kid's meals, which all come with dessert, at the on-site Quest Restaurant and the three-story waterslide, the longest indoor slide in the Greater Toronto Area. There's plenty for adults here too, including juicy steak and ribs at Quest, signature cocktails at the bar, pampering treatments at eclectica Salon and Spa, and a high-tech fitness room.

Air travelers may prefer Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel & Conference Center, just 4 miles from the airport. Its rooms and suites were recently renovated to be even more sleek and stylish. Each one has a 37-inch LCD TV showing premium channels and pay-per-view movies, USB outlets, a mini-fridge, and large floor-to-ceiling windows for admiring the views. Overindulging in the tasty Mediterranean dishes at Olio is easy, but the indoor pool and fitness center can help you stay in shape. When it's time to go, take the free 24-hour shuttle back to the airport.

Picturesque Places in Georgetown, ON

Georgetown is a beautiful community, with stunning natural features just waiting for you. Remember your camera when visiting the following sites.

The Old Seed House Garden is a nearly 2-acre civic garden honoring the legacy of the Dominion Seed House, a business that introduced many locals to the joys of gardening. It's open all year round, but it arguably looks its best in spring, when hundreds of tulips and daffodils create a colorful display. Make sure you stop to reflect at the sunken garden, the site of the original Dominion Seed House.

Scotsdale Farm is so beautiful that it was used as a filming location for The Recruit, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and the TV series Orphan Black. The 531-acre property has stunning rolling hills, lush woodlands, and abundant wildlife. The fiery colors of fall are truly spectacular. Hikers, horse riders, and leashed dogs are always welcome.

Although the Limehouse Conservation Area only offers 3 miles of trails, you shouldn't underestimate this area. It's stunningly beautiful, with babbling brooks and dramatic limestone kilns and ruins from the 1800s. Hiking here is challenging, with rocky crevices and ladders upping the degree of difficulty, but visitors insist it's worth the effort.

For a more leisurely walk, head to Hungry Hollow Trail. It runs along the Silver Creek portion of the Credit River, from south of Georgetown towards Norval. Signs along the way will teach you about the local plants and animals you might see on your journey.

Georgetown is a vibrant community full of friendly locals and superb tourist attractions. Take the time to experience them for yourself on your next vacation.
