Located in south-central Ontario, the town of Orangeville has a storied past. Its archaeological record dates to the early Paleo-Indian period between 9,000 and 8,400 B.C. when the Petun people occupied villages along the Niagara Escarpment. The Petun tribe suffered from disease that European settlers introduced, and they were ultimately attacked by the Iroquois people in 1649, forcing them to flee the area. Other tribes moved into southern Ontario as trade with settlers expanded, including the Three Fires Confederacy in the late 1700s, which consisted of the Chippewa, Odawa, and Potawatomi tribes.

A land surveyor named Ezekiel Robinson received the first land patent in 1820. By 1863, the budding town was named Orangeville after Orange Lawrence, a Connecticut-born businessman who moved to the village and owned several mills. Orangeville received official town status on January 1, 1874.

Today, Orangeville is the commercial and administrative hub for Dufferin County. Its downtown is home to numerous retailers while the Fairgrounds Shopping Centre hosts multiple big-box stores. Given Orangeville's proximity to Toronto, many residents commute to the Greater Toronto Area for work.

Whatever your reasons for visiting Orangeville, Ontario, it's important to find the right accommodation, so you can enjoy everything this wonderful community has to offer.

What is the best time to visit Orangeville, ON?

The best times to visit Orangeville are in the spring and fall. April through May and September through October are considered the shoulder seasons, so you'll find affordable hotel rates and fewer crowds throughout town. You'll also be within easy driving distance of key events in the Greater Toronto Area, including Canada Blooms, Tastemaker Toronto, and the Toronto International Film Festival.

While temperatures in the spring and the fall are warmer than the frigid winter, you should still pack plenty of layers and even a coat, as nighttime lows can dip into the mid-30s Fahrenheit, especially during April and October.

It's no secret that Canada experiences biting-cold winters and ample snowfall, so come prepared and remain flexible in your travel plans if you're visiting from November through March. Heavy-duty gloves, scarves, and hats are a must. But even though you'll be bringing heavier items in your luggage, you'll enjoy rock-bottom hotel rates throughout town.

If you don't mind paying a little more for your hotel, visit Orangeville in the summer. The community hosts large-scale events, including street festivals and the popular Blues and Jazz Festival. Sample fresh produce at the Orangeville Farmers' Market, indulge in delicious eats at the Rotary Ribfest, and discover local eateries at the Great Taste Fashion Gala 2018. Since Orangeville is located about 80 kilometers from Toronto, you won't have to contend with skyrocketed hotel rates, but you should book your room a few months in advance.
