The area was originally occupied by the Huron people. However, by 1650, they'd succumbed to European diseases and the invading Iroquois. The Mississauga people thrived on the land. From 1781, they began selling parcels of land to the British government. By the mid-19th century, all the Mississauga people had relocated to the Six Nations Reserve.
Georgetown's name pays homage to George Kennedy, an entrepreneur who built several mills and other businesses when he became one of the community's first settlers in the 1820s. Many other enterprising individuals moved to Georgetown in the subsequent years, including the Barber brothers, who started the local paper-making industry, and Philo Dayfoot, who started the local leather sector.
Georgetown was incorporated as a village in 1865. It had grown to an incorporated town of more than 2,000 residents by 1921. In 1974, Georgetown became part of the new town, Halton Hills. Today, more than 42,000 people call Georgetown home.
When should you visit Georgetown, ON?
Georgetown is best experienced in late April to May and September through October. During these times, you enjoy warm weather without the summer crowds or high summer accommodation prices. Expect daily highs in the mid-50s to high 60s during these shoulder season months. It can get chilly once the sun sets, though, so make sure you bring a jacket for the cool nights.
While Georgetown doesn't attract the high tourist volumes of Toronto, summer is still the community's peak season. It's not hard to see why, with daytime temperatures typically hovering in the mid- to high 70s. However, heatwaves can send the mercury soaring into the mid-90s.
If price matters most, pack a coat and enjoy the winter weather after New Year. Hotel prices fall to their lowest rates during this time, right along with the temperature! Roughly 28 inches of snow falls every January and February, so you'll need to bundle up.

Georgetown is a beautiful community, with stunning natural features just waiting for you. Remember your camera when visiting the following sites.
The Old Seed House Garden is a nearly 2-acre civic garden honoring the legacy of the Dominion Seed House, a business that introduced many locals to the joys of gardening.
