Below are reviews of the city of Monroe, WI from an actual visitor's perspective.
Although we stayed in the area at Christmas in order to explore nearby New Glarus (Little Switzerland), which is beautiful, our hotel was in Monroe. Monroe does seem like a nice little town. We had breakfast one morning at Amy's Corner Cafe and highly recommend it. It looks like a typical small town midwest diner...but that's a little misleading. The prices were good compared to most places these days. The food was excellent and serving sizes were more than adequate for a mid-morning brunch. The service was EXCEPTIONAL! I'm a believer in the old school philosophy of tipping (which is how tipping began!) of rewarding a server for service that goes beyond the expected. Our server was amazing, and we left a nearly 50% tip...she deserved it! We will almost certainly visit Monroe, and Amy's Corner, again.
The city of Monroe is somewhat in a rural area. It doesn't feel like it because of the hotel location. I love the selection of cheeses offered in a cooler next to the vending machines. Cheese Capital of WI.
The Swiss Colony outlet store and thrift shops. It's a nice town.
