Located in Dane County, the city of Sun Prairie is part of the greater Madison Metropolitan Area. It is the second most populous city in the county. It was originally named when President Martin Van Buren sent a party led by Augustus Bird to create a new capital for the state of Wisconsin, in Madison. After the travelers spent days in the rain, they were soon on the edge of the prairie where they saw the sun shining for the first time in days. They carved the name Sun Prairie into a nearby tree and years later one of the party returned to become the first settler. The village of Sun Prairie was first incorporated in 1868 and later as a city in 1958.
The area is now known as a popular tourist destination for visitors who enjoy golfing, catching a race at the speedway, or stopping by one of the many historical locations.
