Start your introduction to the city from the Historic Valley Junction. This part of the city is a true landmark as it's been a gathering place and a soul of the city for many years. It has been a part of the Main Street Iowa Program since 1987. Here you can pick up some fresh local produce at the Farmers Market. It is home to more than 100 vendors of baked goods, arts and crafts, home-cooked foods, and more. Here you will also be able to experience Music in the Junction on Thursday nights from May to September. Explore the center of the town to some live music from local performers.
From there, you'll be able to quickly get to one of the city's recreational areas - Raccoon River Park. Raccoon River Park provides access to 630 acres of parkland and natural areas with wildlife, as well as offers various amenities like picnic tables and shelters, grills, playfields, and a multi-use trail.
Spend a day near Blue Heron Lake, which is a centerpiece of the park. The lake has a “no wake” policy, which provides for more passive and quiet recreational opportunities. The lake is also stocked with various types of fish, which makes it a great fishing spot for anglers of all ages and skill levels. Fishing is also accessible from the pier on the western bank. You can spend a fun day swimming in designated beach areas of the lake. Or take your best four-legged friend for an off-leash walk in the nearby dog park.
Several other outdoor spaces are scattered around the city, like West Grand and Willow Creek Gold Courses or Southwood and American Legion Parks.
To engage with some city's cultural life, make time to visit The Jordan House Museum. It is one of the oldest structures in Polk County and the oldest in West Des Moines. The stately home was built by one of the first settlers of WDM - James C. Jordan and represents Victorian architecture with Italianate Gothic design. James C. Jordan was an essential figure in the development of the city. He was a businessman and a civic leader heavily involved with local politics. He also was one of the motivators for the relocation of the state capitol from Iowa City to Des Moines. The Jordan House is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and today serves as a Museum of WDM and an office of the local Historical Society.
